Raymond W. Hanson papers, 1916-1982.

Papers of Ray "Rock" Hanson, Western Illinois University's Athletic Director from 1926 to 1964. The collection documents Hanson's early life, his military service in World War I and World War II, his education, his professional life as Coach and Athletic Director, and his post-retirement years. Some materials from his personal life are included, but the majority of the collection documents his military service and professional career. The collection includes photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and ephemera. Significant correspondents include Ronald Reagan, Knute Rockne, and Harry Truman, as well as many noted sportswriters and sports professionals. Also included are photographs of Hanson with many famous individuals taken during his time as Chief Morale Officer at Camp Elliot, San Diego during World War II.
